For some, Christmas is a time of sorrow as they don't have extra money to buy presents for family members or friends, and for many a Christmas dinner with turkey, family or friends is not a reality.

As Betty was widowed 12 years ago and found herself alone at Christmas time, Betty decided that this year would be different. Different it was indeed. Betty fitted a bill of over £1000 to pay for a traditional Christmas dinner for about 50 strangers to have a three course Christmas lunch with her at the local pub - Lamb and Flag. Betty wanted to ensure people were not on their own this Christmas so booked every table in the pub and also had entertainment a band and the parish church choir.

The story is phenomenal. The 86 year old retired pensioner was thinking not about herself, but only about those who may be lonely at Christmas time.

So, this year when you raise a glass at Christmas time, remember Betty for the kindness she has shown.
